Our History

Welcome to Namutumba Innovations Agriculture

Namutumba Innovation Agriculture (NIA) is a local non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 2017 in Namutumba District by members of the Abayudaya (Jewish) community in partnership with their non-Jewish neighbors. The organization was established in response to a devastating famine that year, which left many families in crisis. The food shortage led to distressing consequences, including child marriages—where young girls were exchanged for cattle that families later sold to buy food. With limited options, some households were forced to survive on mangoes as their primary food source. In the aftermath, approximately 55% of families fell into poverty after selling off most of their livestock, including cows and goats, in a desperate bid to meet their basic needs. NIA was created to combat persistent food insecurity and improve rural livelihoods within the rural communities. The organization focuses on empowering women, promoting value addition to agricultural products, and providing education for underprivileged children guided by the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam—"repairing the world." NIA also works to ensure access to clean water and sanitation, while supporting environmental conservation efforts to build resilient and sustainable communities.
