Our History

Welcome to Namutumba Innovations Agriculture

Namutumba Innovation Agriculture (NIA) is a local non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2017 in Namutumba District by members of the Abayudaya (Jewish) community in collaboration with their non-Jewish neighbors. The organization was founded in response to the severe famine that affected many families that year, leading to distressing consequences such as child marriages, where young girls were married off in exchange for cattle, which families then sold to buy food. Some families were left with no option but to survive on mangoes as their main source of sustenance. This crisis resulted in approximately 55% of families becoming impoverished as they sold off most of their livestock, including cows and goats, to afford food. To address the persistent food insecurity in rural communities, NIA was established with the primary goal of enhancing agriculture and livelihoods among the Abayudaya communities. The organization focuses on empowering women, promoting value addition to agricultural produce, providing education to underprivileged children based on the principle of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, and supporting environmental conservation efforts.
